Have you heard this joke?
Bob: I've tried everything but I can't get rid of the horrible pain in my head. My medical doctor has given me every possible pain killer to try, my naturopath has given me every possible supplement to try, my chiropractor has adjusted me hundreds of times, and I've even tried hypnotherapy. Nothing has cured me. Can you help?
Sally: Have you tried removing the nail that's jammed into your forehead?
I like this joke because it's similar to what I often see. So and so has "tried everything" to fix their problem except removing what is causing the problem in the first place.
For example, the most common approach to treat dry skin is lotion. Well, dry skin is not caused by the absence of lotion! If you just want to cover up a problem temporarily, lotion may work for you. But if you want a real solution, you need to address the root cause of the problem. When it comes to the human body, the root cause of more than 90% of common injuries and pains people experience is the way they move.
Most people think they move well enough. They believe they can keep doing whatever they've been doing, and just depend on luck or visit the doctor or physiotherapist or surgeon or whoever to come to the rescue when needed... but that strategy is proving to be very unsuccessful for A LOT of people.
When you look at common injuries, pain complaints, and general movement incompetence, it's easy to see that it's almost all movement related. When an office worker has back pain, when a runner has knee pain, when a child has foot pain (I could go on and on).... it is almost never "genetics", and it is not like an infection that just invades your body. It is how you move!
To be straightforward, (most) people don't move well. A lot of it is environmental and cultural - modern lifestyles are simply unnatural on many levels. When I say unnatural, I don't decide what is natural, nature decides. The shoes (most) people wear are unnatural. The way (most) people travel around in vehicles everywhere is unnatural. The way (most) people exercise is unnatural. Even the way (most) people sit or go to the bathroom is unnatural! So what else would you expect other than unnatural physical development and an ever-growing list of diagnosed and undiagnosed structural problems, physical pains, and injuries?
Movement is a skill. Don't take that for granted. If you want your body to feel and work better, you need to increase your movement skill and practice moving better. You need to ensure your physical development happens properly and intentionally, not by accident. And that is exactly what is happening - a lot of accidental and unnatural physical development - because there is simply not enough attention or effort dedicated to understanding, using, and managing the body. It is so obvious yet still, so surprisingly, blatantly ignored.
Skillz Movement is a movement development practice that includes awareness and education about the body and how it works from a very practical perspective, a comprehensive training process to develop a balanced physical structure, and the practice of skillful movement. I am grateful and happy to be able to share my insights and practice with anyone who values and appreciates their body enough to show it some respect. I am inspired by other individuals who aren't driven by social standards, but by the possibility of experiencing their own true potential through the necessary attention, involvement, and dedication.
